The head coach for Afghanistan National Football Team, Yousuf Kargar, has been flown to India for further medical treatment after he was stabbed in Kabul, sources said.
Initially, Kargar was in serious condition after he was stabbed multiple times Saturday night near his residence by unidentified people.
However, his brother Haroon Kargar told TOLOnews on Monday that Kargar was in better condition and has been flown to India.
"Police investigations are underway to identify and arrest the perpetrators," Kargar said. "My brother is still unable to speak to tell who attacked him."
He noted that they had no personal or family enmity with anyone.
Meanwhile, the Afghan elite footballers and sportsmen strongly criticize the attack on Kargar, demanding the government to bring the culprits to justice.
"This is the act of those who have been away from sports and want to hamper the growth of our sportsmen," footballer Farid Mawlavi said. "We want the government to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice."
The Football Federation of Afghanistan also strongly condemned the attack on the elite footballer, believing it a big blow to the country's sports sector.
Kargar is among the prominent figures in Afghanistan's sports. He received the title of Afghanistan's Legend Footballer after the national team won the South Asian Football Championship.
